Take your hiking boots and let’s explore the most beautiful geological formation in Cusco: The Rainbow Mountain or the Apu Winicunca as the locals name it. Located in the Peruvian Andes in Cusco, just 3 hours away from the historical center, Rainbow Mountain is becoming the main attraction to see after or before Machu Picchu. As you could guess, the mountain is famed for its natural, multicolored beauty at a staggering 5,200 m above sea level. This rainbow-like appearance is created by the sediment of minerals throughout the area, giving the mountain the turquoise, lavender, gold and other colors.
It was only recently discovered due to the snow melting, revealing the hidden gem that’s still considered holy by many until this day. Since its discovery, Rainbow Mountain as slowly started gaining popularity and has even been listed in National Geographic’s “Top 100 Places To Visit Before You Die”.
Early in the morning, we pick you up from your hotel in Cusco Approx. 3:30 a.m. – 4:00 a.m. (pick-up time may very be depending on the weather), then we drive through the southern valley for 2 hours and 40 minutes until we reach the town of Cusipata where we will have our first stop to have our breakfast in a local buffet restaurant.
Then we continue our trip in the transport along a path between mountains and impressive landscapes, on the route you will also be able to see a variety of flora and fauna between llamas and alpacas that embellish the natural environment. We start our walk of approximately 2 hours and a half until we reach the summit of Rainbow mountain which is at an altitude of 5000 meters above sea level approx. From this point you can see the snowy Ausangate that lies in the distance. At the top you will have time to take the photos you have always dreamed of after approximately 40 minutes it is time to descend and return to the place where our transport awaits us, who will bring us back to the restaurant to taste our lunch.
Then is the time to return to Cusco, where we will leave you at your hotel.
