Be amused with the majestic turquoise waters of the Humantay Lake, start this hike with a beautiful landscape and reach the glacier-based Lake. Humantay Lake, or Laguna Humantay, sparkles in the Andes mountain range like an emerald jewel. Its brilliant green and blue water makes it one of the most well-known lakes in Peru, as well as one of the top day trips from Cusco. Below you will find all the information you need to visit this hidden gem.
This extremely photogenic lake is located about 75 miles to the northwest of Cusco and just south of Machu Picchu. Humantay sits snugly between Humantay Mountain and Salkantay Mountain. In fact, it is a popular branch-off hike when trekking along the Salkantay Trail, an incredibly scenic alternative to the Inca Trail. Humantay falls along the Vilcabamba mountain range.
The tour begins with the pickup from your hotel in Cusco approx. 4:00 am, then we go for 2 hours and a half until we reach Mollepata where we will have our breakfast in a local restaurant, after enjoying and taking a lot of energy back, we take on board the transport that will take us to Soraypampa on the route we will be able to appreciate the beautiful landscapes and plenty of vegetation depending on the season.
Arriving at Soraypampa you will be impressed by the snow that lies at the bottom of the walk, we start walking for approximately 2 hours until we reach the Humantay lagoon at an altitude of 4200 meters above sea level, the road is difficult due to the altitude, the turquoise lagoon that is located at the foot of the snow-capped Salkantay. You will have time to explore the area and the photographs.
So it is here at this point that the guide performs a small ceremony to the land since you should always ask permission and thanks to the Pachamama and you will be a participant. Then we return to Soraypampa where our transport awaits us to take us back to the restaurant for the respective lunch.
